Transgender Troops Provide Testimony to Congress for the First Time

On February 27, 2019, Chair-Elect of the American Medical Association (AMA) Board of Trustees Jesse Ehrenfeld, MD, MPH, provided testimony to the House Armed Services Committee on AMA policy that states "there is no medically valid reason to exclude transgender individuals" from US military service. GLMA was proud to have introduced this policy to the AMA House of Delegates, which was unanimously in 2015. Click here to see the GLMA-led resolution passed by the AMA.

Five decorated transgender troops also provided testimony for the first time before Congress, and shared how they have been able to serve without incident and often with distinction, standing as proof against President Trump's argument that their presence within the military is a burden.

Jesse Ehrenfeld, MD, MPH, is a GLMA member and a past recipient of the GLMA Achievement Award.
