GLMA Statement in Support of Abortion Rights

On May 5, GLMA President Nick Grant, PhD, ABPP, issued this statement following the leak of a draft Supreme Court opinion on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health:

"We are outraged.

"We are outraged by the threat to abortion access that many of us woke up to two days ago. An attack on abortion rights is an attack on our fundamental right to healthcare and bodily autonomy.

"Abortion remains legal in this nation and the leaked draft ruling in the Mississippi abortion restrictions case before the Supreme Court is not final. GLMA was proud to join an amicus brief of health professional associations in that case supporting abortion rights.

"But we know that if the Supreme Court’s final ruling at all resembles the leaked draft, it will result in disproportionate harm to the already marginalized, including people of color, low-income people, and LGBTQ people. The ongoing and coordinated attacks on abortion rights are part of a broader right-wing agenda to turn back the clock on reproductive freedoms, LGBTQ rights, and racial equity.

"Let’s be clear: this draft ruling on abortion, in and of itself, represents a grave threat to LGBTQ equality.

"That’s why GLMA has joined with abortion rights advocates in supporting Bans Off Our Bodies, a mass mobilization to support our right to abortion and reproductive health. Bans Off Our Bodies is organizing a massive nationwide day of action with rallies across the country on May 14. We’ll see you there.

"It is critical for LGBTQ healthcare providers to visibly and vocally oppose this attack on our freedoms as providers and as LGBTQ people. Take action now at www.bansoff.org and find a rally near you!"
