Academic Health

GLMA recognizes academic health plays a significant role in improving the health and well-being of LGBTQ individuals. GLMA has a long history of working with health professional students and trainees and with health professional school faculty and staff to improve LGBTQ climate and curricula as well as mentorship and networking opportunities.

Below are just some of the areas in which GLMA has worked and continues to work with our many partners in LGBTQ health:

  • Improving the climate at health professional schools
  • Promoting research
  • Fostering LGBTQ involvement in academic health careers
  • Improving LGBTQ health content in health professional school curricula
  • Promoting networking and mentorship

Resources for those working or interested in academic health:
  • GLMA’s White Paper: Recommendations for Enhancing the Climate for LGBT Students & Employees in Health Professional Schools, a comprehensive set of recommendations—authored by Shane Snowdon—that offer resources for making health professional schools more equitable, inclusive and welcoming from an LGBT standpoint.

  • Implementing Curricular and Institutional Climate Changes to Improve Health Care for Individuals Who Are LGBT, Gender Nonconforming, or Born with DSD: A Resource for Medical Educators: Produced by Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), this publication defines core competencies in LGBT Medical Education designed to assist institutions in implementing curricular and climate change in medical education.

  • Lesbian Health Fund (LHF): Promoting research by providing grants for research on the health needs of lesbian and other sexual minority women.

  • GLMA’s Annual Conference: Provides a forum for presenting research, learning the latest in LGBT health, networking with colleagues and connecting mentors with mentees.

  • Building the Next Generation of Academic Physicians (BNGAP), with whom GLMA partnered to conduct research at GLMA’s 31st Annual Conference

  • GLMA’s Student & Trainee Committee: Students and trainees working together to improve LGBTQ curricula and climate at health professional schools across the country.

  • GLMA’s Faculty Committee: Comprised of faculty from health professional schools across the country who share resources and network to improve LGBTQ curricula and climate.

  • Virtual Support Group for LGBTQ Nurse Authors: This online resource—created out of the 2013 GLMA Nursing Summit—is a private online forum for nurses who are interested in publishing work in nursing journals to learn from and support each other.

  • Become a GLMA Member: Members receive special discounts to the Annual Conference on LGBTQ Health (new peer-review journal) as well as networking opportunities.

  • MedEdPORTAL®: Free, cross-indexed suite of services provided by the Association of American Medical Colleges. Through Publications, iCollaborative and the CE Directory, MedEdPORTAL aims to equip healthcare professionals across the continuum with effective and efficient educational tools to improve patient care.
