On March 17, 2021, in a bipartisan vote, the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions advanced the nomination of Rachel Levine, MD, as Assistant Secretary for Health in the US Department of Health and Human Services. Scott Nass, MD, MPA, FAAFP, AAHIVS, and Hector Vargas, JD, issued this statement in response:
With this vote, Rachel Levine is one step closer to becoming the highest ranking openly transgender person to serve in the US government and the first transgender nominee to be confirmed by the Senate. With an exemplary record of public service and public health leadership in Pennsylvania, including as leader of Pennsylvania’s COVID-19 response, Rachel Levine is eminently qualified for the position. We look forward to working with the full Senate towards her swift confirmation.
