The American College of Pediatricians (not to be confused with the 60,000 member American Academy of Pediatrics) is distributing letters to school superintendents containing factually inaccurate information about sexual orientation and gender identity and promoting unsupported and potentially dangerous “reparative therapies” for LGBT students. Widely condemned as harmful by mainstream medical and health organizations, including the American Medical Association, American Psychological Association, American Psychiatric Association, and American Counseling Association, "reparative therapy" is a pseudo-scientific approach to change a person’s sexual orientation from homosexual or bisexual to heterosexual using techniques that can include psychoanalysis, group therapy, aversive conditioning (involving electric shock or nausea-inducing drugs), and involvement in ex-gay ministries.
As reported in the online blog Box Turtle Bulletin, the American College of Pediatricians was founded in 2002 after the American Academy of Pediatrics voted to adopt a position in support of gay and lesbian parents. Six pediatricians who opposed this policy on religious grounds rallied like-minded friends and with about 15 people founded the organization as a vehicle through which a small minority of anti-LGBT physicians advocate in opposition to gay rights and other issues.
